Three new students have received funding, and we continued with the existing 5 students in senior secondary school. We also funded Francis Bebe for his second year at polytechnic.
We have provided funding for the 3 students detailed below to continue their education. Adams Yussif is entering his third year and Mama Osuman and Soloman Nuurizie are continuing into their second year.
Details of the four new students are given below.
Dassana Joe
Joe is a Wala boy from the village of Wechiau. He is a Christian. Joe’s parents are very poor farmers from the town of Wechiau; the fact that both are listed as his guardians is an indication of the limited status of the boy’s father. With a score of 20 on his national exams, Joe is proven he is able to be ranked among the top students in the area (best recorded result was a total score of 18; anything above 30 is considered too low to gain entry at a Senior Secondary School). Joe is attending Lassie Tuolu Senior Secondary School
Vampere Hasehni
Hasehni is an Islamic boy from the village of Dornye and is a member of the Birifor (Lobi) tribal group. He performed well in the national exams, finishing with an overall score of 21 and has been accepted into the Wa Islamic Senior Secondary Schools, one of the country’s top ranking schools. Hasehni’s parents are illiterate farmers.
Imori Rukia
Rukia is the first girl to be selected for a Friends of Wechiau scholarship. She is a Wala girl from Wechiau and is the daughter of the Paramount chief (known locally as the Wechiau-Naa). Rukia managed a 28 on her national exams and was placed at the Bole High School in the Home Economics programme. Though Rukia is from a prominent family in Wechiau, neither of her parents has benefited from any schooling; both are illiterate.
Francis Bebe (Saibu Francis Nyiivuro)
Francis has been a non-formal teacher at the Heather Graham Primary School, and previous to the school being built, at the Talawona voluntary school. Francis has been keen for some time to obtain qualifications and has demonstrated his commitment to the local community. We thought it was important to assist this young man in furthering his education so we have provided some funding to be reviewed after one year.

In 2006 to 2007 we provided GBP300 to NCRC to fund the following for the academic year October 2006 to June 2007:
1. GBP100 for Adams Yussif to continue into his second year at senior secondary school. Adams has progressed well with the funding we provided last year.
2. Two further scholarships of GBP100 each for Mohammed Toyali Osuman, known to all as ‘Mama’, and Soloman D. Nuurizie. (photo thanks to Donna J Sheppard, Sanctuary Advisor, NCRC & Calgary Zoo)
We have also providing GBP100 for educational material for Wechiau Primary school. You can read the full report about the students and the support to the school here.
The Friends of Wechiau Group provided a scholarship of GBP 100 for their first student to attend senior secondary school in December 2005.
Our first student is Adams Yussif. Yussif is a 20 year old young man who has shown a commitment to higher education when he qualified to attend senior secondary school during 2004, but was unable to attend through lack of funds. Yussif has lost his father and his mother may have a terminal illness.
The scholarship has been able to pay the school fees for the year, on-site accommodation for two terms and a contribution towards meals
The selection was made by an education committee at the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary, who included the following: (photo thanks to Donna J Sheppard, Sanctuary Advisor, NCRC & Calgary Zoo)
